This started out as a commment on Peter's post, it was really long so I am making my own post:
I figured I'd chip in, as a girl, and you can call me evil or aruge if you want:
I'm pro-choice.. to a point, I understand how it can be considered murder etc. I am not totally heartless but I think that considerations need to be made to prevent accidents, etc.
My view is that after a certain point in pregnancy, abortion should be illegal, I guess that as a very un-devout Catholic I have a large air of superstition for that of what is often refered to as a "soul" but I do agree with science and I think that after the beginnings of a brain are developed, abortion shouldn't be allowed. I guess that I fail to see a thumping clump of tissues as a person yet, and I really do understand how heathenish that sounds. But thats how I see it.. I started out completely pro-life as soon as I was intelligent enough to know what abortion was but considerations as a potential bearer I reconsidered my thoughts. The thing is that in this world of many cruelties, one abortion, there is another, rape. What do you do in those cases? Do you tell the woman she is forced to bear that child that began with, not intentions of shared love, but one-sided causes of pain, hurt, and suffering? And I think you mentioned about the abortion to save the mother, which life is more valuble. This comes down to yet another, hard decision. Ectopic (I think thats how you spell it) pregnancies are extremely dangerous for woman and child, the child will grown in a much more confined space and probably have development and/or mental defects and may even die from its cramped quarters or even the bleeding out of its mother if she chooses not to abort it. The mother if she does not choose to have the child has a very large (I'm not sure of the actual percentage) chance of dying and you run the risk of killing both lives. So it comes down to that. Other considerations are: drug addicts, AIDS sufferers, alchoholics, teenagers, etc. Now I understand with all of these, it is considered selfish by many to abort a child if you have one of these conditions as you can give up your addictions, give the child up for adoption if you can't take care of it, have special procedues to keep the child from get AIDS, etc. But many people don't and children are born so much less privledged and many die. Hm.. from reading myself I think I am giving the impression of "they will die anyway" but thats really not what I mean at all.. I just want to lay out the considerations.. now that this comment is incredibly long.. I will layout my poin that: if you make abortion illegal completely.. you will bring back the problems of the past when women would get unsafe illegal abortions kiling many of the women and the children as well.. isn't that the point of learning history? So you don't repeat the past?

All in all.. I'm not sure of what I am.. pro-choice seems secure, because if I was faced with this.. I would want my options.. but if I was faced with it a group of men said "we order you to have this baby, its the law".. I wouldn't give a flying fuck if I decided then to be pro-choice.. also I'd like to add.. the problem with abortion is deeply based in religious morals.. the United States has seperation of church and state and many religions based here.. to decide if abortion was murder.. you have to decide what murder is.. murder is a killing of a life, when does science consider it a life.. is that consideration based on Christian or some other value? thats where it falls.. I mean.. anyway.. thats why its careful to word things right.. otherwise you can be blamed for forcing your beliefs on people.. and how at that point are you different that terrorists or cults or what.. so thats what I think..... its just easier for me to think about.. so again my view: abortion.. to a point.. then it can be illegal.. lalala... I have work tomorrow..... x.x
---
Further note: I have no considerations of even bringing myself at risk for this problem.. in that part of morals I can be a good little Catholic.. and after marriage I would have no consideration of abortion.. what I speak for is a 15.999999999999999999888 year old girl.. so you know.. stuff changes.... I believed in the tooth fairy and I'm still afraid of the dark.. so I am still an impressionable lump of clay.. still moldable.... so feel free to change my mind....now for sleep... ahhh.. sleep ^_~ -Sarah

Date: 2002-08-06 06:09 am (UTC)If there is a risk to the mother, than the Catholic Church will let you get an abortion.
I understand if a person who is raped wants to abort the child, and that makes sense. But this is rare, and I still think its moral only to carry out the pregnancy.
And then, the others are selfish, and these are the types of abortion that shouldn't exist. If a teen is pregnant, its her own damn fault, and now she needs to at least carry the baby. Drug addicts can check themselves into rehab.
Worse still is women who defend abortion so they can control there family. They are already married, but don't want children. These are the most selfish choices I've ever seen.
It doesn't take much to care for a baby though. I mean, are we so incompetent that we need to have lots of money, while the poorest women in the world can have children(some die, and some survive)?

Date: 2002-08-06 06:17 pm (UTC)i know people who can survive with food and protection. thats all a baby needs, food and protection. (very simple, everything else is just for the babies comfort, but not necessary).
if people needed a lot, no one would be living in the 3rd world. except those that are rich and frrom the west.
