I think I'm learning something here..
Jul. 22nd, 2003 10:01 amWell, I think that paragraph tagging about 100 or so articles has taught me a lot about the issue. While I'm inspired I think I will write about what it is.
Basically my uncle is "pro-choice" for psychiatry. Currently, the court can force you to be put on drugs and even come to your house and give them to you (they have that right in Texas). My uncle is working so people cannot be forcibly commited, put on drugs (they are all mind damaging), or electroshocked.
What I have learned though is broader than this. Do you want to read something terrifying??
Alex Asch's Story
He was forcibly put in a Mormon Training Camp when his parents got angry with his behavior. He was diagnosed with something called "ODD" Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Basically, he rebelled to authority. Now he is stuck without rights because he acted like a teenager.
I think I'm seeing how absolutely sick our society is. Basically: Ritalin, Prozac, and Paxil are inherently evil productions of squandering drug companies. Think about it... the "depression" and ADD/ADHD epidemics didn't start until those things hit the market. Kids put on Ritalin for being kids - just wanting to play, run around. I'm now terrified for our future, people everywhere on mind altering drugs because some psychiatrist getting a HUGE cut from the drug companies said "there is something wrong with you - this will fix you."
My uncle pointed out the Zoloft commercial, it goes something like this: "blah blah blah may be caused by a chemical imbalance, Zoloft will fix this imbalance." Think about that. Where did the "may" go. Zoloft "will fix" something maybe not even causing your problem - it does by altering chemicals in your brain. A New York times article revealed the horrible problems people have quitting these drugs which companies deny is typical "withdrawl" symptoms. "Because their drugs aren't addictive" - they say.
But yeah. I hope I don't sound like a crazy radical now but I'm shocked how underground these mainstream paper's articles are kept. You will see 100 drug commercials before you see an article against them. Its shocking. I've made a decision with myself - no drugs and none for my future children. If they are diagnosed with ADHD by a school psychiatrist (as thousands are); first thing I will do is punch the doctor and then I will switch the kid's school - because afterwards they generally say: drugs or suspension. Before I get into a long rant about the horrendous condition of our education system, I have more stuff to paragraph tag.
Tee hee. ^-^

Date: 2003-07-24 09:58 pm (UTC)I always check up on what's goin on in your life from time to time (congrats on the 4 on AP Eng), but being the lurker that I am, I won't say anything til something really catches me, and this has. =)
I agree with you about how these companies are evil, and there is false advertising involved. But you have to remember about the thousands of lives they may have saved. I started therapy when I was 13 due to some family problems, and I was ultimately put on Paxil because I was threatening suicide, and it literally saved my life. I know that a lot of people are looking for a way out of stupid shit, like you were pointing out, but there are people out there with genuine problems that use these drugs for temporary relief.
Your uncle is right about the Zoloft commercial, and it can also go for that bullshit Paxil one as well. Even though Paxil saved my life, it was the worst thing I've ever gone through to get off of it. I had to be put on another anti-depressant (Welbutrin) to get off of it. You know what's amazing though? Now these companies are looking for another way to market these drugs. Lexapro, which is a stronger version of Celexa, is an anti-depressant, however, they have recently started selling it as a weight loss pill.
I guess I just wanted say that I agree with you.. =)
Take care!
Wow, somebody read.. o_o
Date: 2003-07-27 12:46 am (UTC)I read a really long article about quitting Paxil; that is really great that you did manage to get off of it. I hear it is really hard and people who stopped just were in living agony/hell. Most had to go to the liquid form and go off one mL at a time.
Drugs scare me. I think the worst drugging is probably of kids who are so quickly diagnosed with "ADHD" it just seems like people don't want to try to help kids learn - "oh he is too hyperactive and would rather run around and play than focus on hard work; put him on drugs or he won't be able to come back until he is on some." They are giving it to babies & toddlers now. Stuff is out of control.
I'm glad that you commented. ^-^ I'm glad that the drug did work for you and helped you out, I'm glad to see the other side of the story too.
